From The Director's Chair: Happy New Year

Hello there fellow authors and friends, happy new year. ......

This is the first installment of a journal of all updates with the L.A.Black Book Expo (LABBX) and other events in California. I started thisback two years ago and now starting this back over to provide everyonewith news, events and thoughts leading up to our August 15, 2009 BlackBook Expo in Los Angeles...

We have started registration for our expo and although there won’t be a deadline this year, the earliest you reserve a spot is always the best time. I understand there are other nationwide book events that authors plan to attend even in this bad economy, so this is part of the reason why I decided to announce registration early rather than wait until March or even April when we have the space, but not the authors available.

Next month will be an exciting time for us at the LABBX. Our new partnership with Barnes and Noble at the Grove (Farmer’s Market) has allowed us to present bookfairs inside the store with panel discussions, children’s reading time, and a planned poetry festival along with our upcoming relationship forum on Sunday, February 8, 2009. Just before Valentine’s weekend, our esteemed panelists headed by our host author and speaker Na’Kisha Crawford (So Good It Hurts) will help you find the perfect mate and/or to improve your love life. What makes our bookfairs special is through BN, we have vouchers (that you can email me at labbex@gmail.com for one), which are used to buy virtually anything in the store including CD’s, books and coffee that helps secure funds for the LABBX. I’ll have more on the vouchers later on, but if you’re interested (even if you can’t make it), please email me and I’ll fill you on the rest.

This past December 2008, we had authors donate books as part of the Michael Baisden Book and Toy Drive here in Los Angeles, in partnership with 93.5 The Beat FM who’s also on board with us. It’s always good to do something for the youth and it continues on Saturday, February 28, 2009 inside the AC Bilbrew Library when our young people participate in an open mic sharing their thoughts on creating their own history for themselves. A previous post has all the details but along with that, is our annual California Writers Collective free writers workshop following immediately at 2:00 PM. The collective is made up of Northern and Southern California authors and poets who network and support each other. For years now, we’ve been in AC Bilbrew sharing our knowledge and through our workshops, helped two aspiring authors become published. So the CWC workshop is a must if youhave a novel in your heart but don’t know how to put it on paper.

Sincethe LABBX has lots of exciting news for the months ahead, I suggest youlisten to North Bay Media Review’s Mixed Matters for all updates on theexpo and if you’re an author (time to plug the show :)), I and co-host Chandra Adams would love to have you on the show and discuss your works with us. The show is available for download on Itunes and it would be a great way to post it on your website (hint, hint). Contact us at mixedmatters@gmail.com

More news will come soon, but thanks for reading. Take care.
